Should Judge Tom Head stay or go? We've had a lot of calls and one listener editorial from L. Scott Mann
What do you think?
The views of the following are those of the writer and not necessarily those of Rock 101.1 or Wilks Broadcasting :
1 - If we want Judge Head out of office we either vote him out or follow the procedure in the state constitution for removal of judges. Now, quit whining and posturing, research the process and file your complaint if you think you have one. We follow the law in Texas not the mob.
For those of you calling for the judge's resignation who don't live in Texas: stay.
2 - The judge's statements are protected speech. The U.S. Supreme Court specifically affirmed that judges too have First Amendment rights. The Constitution trumps our outrage.
3 - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, an elitist accustomed to acknowledging only leaders of nations, responded to Judge Head's remarks through a spokesman: "No one, not even the United Nations, would ever mess with Texas" (Reuters). Score one for Texas sovereignty.
Let’s lighten up a little, a Lubbock County Judge called out the U.N. and they backed down. That's something we can laugh about and it almost makes this whole episode worthwhile.
I hope and expect Judge Head will have nothing more to say. But if we ever thought that the national media believed Lubbock was anything more than NRA, USA with a college football team that takes the field with two shotguns and a "Get your guns up!" then we were fooling ourselves. We'll never be stylish enough for CNN and The Huffington Post.
It's time to turn down the rhetoric. Let's stop trying to please the press, be proud of who we are and give the local guy a break. Piling on takes no courage.
And really, if there was a worst case scenario who would we rather have in charge, a man who'll hand over the keys to the county or one who, however quixotic, is committed to stand in front of the troop carrier?
God bless Texas and God bless Lubbock, America, my home, a place I am proud to live and love.
