I came; I saw…it kicked my ass!!!
I’m talking about the 2016 Fan Expo in Dallas featuring three days jam packed full of geek and pop culture and more! If you have never been to a convention before then you are missing out. These events are awesome; from the movie and TV stars to comic book writers and artists who come to share stories with the fans. Don’t get me started on all of the cool booths that were there with all sorts of cool merchandise from T-shirts to posters, light sabers to broadswords, sonic screwdrivers to phasers…it’s truly a “geeks” paradise.
But what is really great about being there is the other “fans’ you run into during your travels. These just aren’t your stereotypical people living in their mom’s basement. These are people from all walks of life who have come together…some as far as Australia and China have made the journey to Texas to share in the things that they love. Yes, there were people dressed up in costumes…great costumes as a matter of fact, but you don’t have to dress up to attend one of these events to attend and have a great time.
Arriving at the event:
I arrived Friday to pick up my “Press” pass and was informed that unfortunately the “Stars” who were attending would be unable to grant any interviews due to the limited time that they had…time that they would prefer to spend talking to the fans, signing autographs and taking photos. But, don’t worry…it still managed to score a few interviews from some great exhibitors who had built an awesome Rancor from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, some Stormtroopers from the 501st Legion and even a Cecil Grimes…he is a Rick Grimes impersonator from the Walking Dead.
It was difficult to try to attend ALL the panels that took place this weekend. But, some of the highlights included the Doctor Who panel with the Doctor himself Peter Capaldi, fans of the Netflix Daredevil TV show were treated to stories from the set from two of its stars (Punisher) Jon Bernthal and (Foggy) Eldon Henson.
I also attended panels featuring the deceased King Joffery…Jack Gleeson (who is a really nice kid in real life, lol), C-3PO himself Anthony Daniels and for a Star Trek geek such as myself…there was a panel on the Klingon language “tlhlngan wej pejatlh maj” (no it’s not a typo…it means “I do not speak Klingon very well…in Klingon of course ). I’m pretty sure you’ve probably have seen “Ghostbusters” but I’m pretty sure you’ve never “Heard” Ghostbusters performed live by a voice cast that features the voices of Winnie The Pooh, Goofy, Pee Wee Herman, Christopher Walken, Jack Sparrow, John Wayne and more…it was a treat and I captured a little bit of the performance for all to see!
Jay & Silent Bob:
All the fun and festivities came to a conclusion on Sunday evening with writer, director Kevin Smith and his partner in crime Jason Mewes entertaining the crowded auditorium with tales too ribald to share here (yes I have video as well, but I would have to bleep every few seconds and what fun is it listening to Jay and Silent Bob with bleep after bleep). From Star Trek to Star Wars…DC or Marvel, the Kay Bailey Convention Center became a judgment free zone where you were accepted and not ridiculed for liking time lords, wookies, starships and superheroes. I for one think that it’s great that we have conventions such as this in our “own backyard” and hope that these get-together’s continue for quite some time.
Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there and give you the Vulcan salute…as the late Leonard Nimoy would say…LLAP!
